Combined Summer Camp Activities
Just in case you didn\'t have enough to do for your children we have got together with some of the other activities here in Falmouth Harbour to try and combine our efforts and come up with a transport solution to get between various activities.
Attached is a fairly rough spreadsheet but hopefully it will show what you can do, when and how much it\'s going to cost.
The activities we have teamed up with are as follows.
Samantha\'s Tennis camp;
This starts at 9 in the morning at Galleon Beach and usually involves approx an hour of games in the morning followed by an hour’s Tennis practice.
Samantha has the use of one of the villas in Galleon beach where she administers lunch for approx 45 mins.
This is followed by 1 hr on the beach doing games etc , the Tennis practice starts up again at approx 3 until she finishes at 4.
Samantha is very flexible with times and prices and will accommodate to suit, she also has the use of a 7 seater minivan which she will use to transport children around between activities.
This year Samantha is planning on getting more staff and is hoping to do more crafts etc.
You can call her on 771-8549 for more details.
Springhill Riding Club.
This is run by Terri who will be doing a 2 hour session from 3pm to 5pm for up to
12 children Monday to Friday
Activities include learning to ride and developing proper horse management skills by participating in most activities at the stables as well as games and completing worksheets.
For more information please contact Terri at Springhill on 7733139
Antigua Yacht club,
We are doing Fortnightly sessions of either mornings (9 - 12) or afternoons
(2 - 5), we don\'t recommend that you do both as it can be a long day out on the water, therefore a week’s tuition is stretched over 2 weeks of either mornings or afternoons.
At the end of the 2 weeks your child should be able to rig a boat, sail around a triangle single handed and name the parts of a boat
For more information please call either Richard or Nesie on 460 - 1799
I hope this is of help and we all look forward to hearing from you.

Nation s Cup
We have been asked if we have a team who would like to compete in the nations cup in the USA in November this year.
The Nations cup is going on around the world and our division (Caribbean and
Americas) is being competed in the USA.
The event is to be sailed in J-22 and requires either a team of 3 men or 4 women, there is a maximum crew weight limit.
If you want to be considered for this event, please have a look at the attached NOR and get back to us asap,
It would be great to send 2 teams from Antigua, I lookforward to hearing from you,
Kind regards
Richard Chadburn

Soundings 2.
SOUNDINGS – NO: 2 June 2008
It is about 3 months since our last newsletter in March when the season was in full swing. Since that time the following events have taken place:
THE ANTIGUA LASER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS: 15/16th March - With good entries & excellent sailing conditions there was some exciting racing with our own Karl James the overall winner. Keir and Raphael – both from Sunsail were second and third.
THE ‘FIESTA’ 16th March, on the Morris Bay (Curtain Bluff) beach saw about a dozen boats in the bay & about 50 people on the beach for an afternoon of Salsa, Fajitas & Margaritas’.
Then we were into April & the run-up to the CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA which saw, again, increased entries - 61 Classics plus 8 of the new Dragon Class. With great conditions for all but the last day, and the very enjoyable social events – particularly the Welcome Party on the AYC lawn – this, our flagship event, was once again a great success thanks to Kenny Coombs and his ever growing team of volunteers.
As most of you are aware, we do not have a role in ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK as it is run by the Antigua Hotel Association, but we did host a prizegiving party for Nautor Swan which saw about 250 people on the AYC lawn.
The WHITSUN CRUISE TO DESHAIES took place 10/12th May – there were 8 boats gathered for a very convivial dinner on Friday night. On Saturday, 4 of them left to search out rum distilleries as far south as Martinique for the next couple of weeks. All reports indicate that, a) they had a really good time & b) Rum IS the answer!!! (see www.jhycantigua.com for full report).
The ANNUAL GREEN ISLAND WEEKEND – 14/15th June. Although only 11 boats (including 2 from Guadeloupe) participated with a correspondingly small number of people (approx 30) it was a truly memorable event enjoyed by all. With fair winds and glorious weather the sailing was great. Later in the afternoon, with a gazebo up and all the coloured lights giving a party ambiance, everybody came ashore to enjoy the BBQ and party. The real treat came after dinner when Marie & Maxim from the French yacht ‘Brise’ offered us live music on flute & guitar respectively. They both play in a Gipsy Jazz band in Guadeloupe and the next couple of hours was truly magical. The ‘Green Island Choir’ was in full swing to accompany them. When, after many an encore by demand, they finally stopped playing, we carried on partying until the early hours. After a (later than advertised) cooked breakfast & some Bloody Marys for a ‘hair of the dog’, the 2 French boats departed on the 12/14 hour sail back to St.Francois on the south coast of Guadeloupe. We could not thank them enough for making the effort to come all the way up for the weekend and then provide us with such wonderful entertainment.
‘SUNDAY FUNDAYS’ have been held on a monthly basis since January and they have all been well attended. It is our intention to plan a regular schedule of Fundays for next season.
We have also had some more very successful QUIZ NIGHTS with Dave Fitzmaurice as Quizmaster in March & Sue Willis as Quizmistress in May.
With a look to the future, our next big event is the CARIBBEAN DINGHY CHAMPIONSHIPS to be held on the w/e of 19/20th July. We expect to welcome 5 teams (of 6 people) from other Islands so will have 36 boats on the water.
Due to the closure of the Sunsail Club Colonna, we have been able to hire 2 further sailing instructors. Sylvester (aka Syl) – a senior RYA instructor- and Keaddy Martin (aka Spice) - RYA Instructor – are now available for lessons for both kids and adults. Also, as Karl is away for a month racing in the Mediterranean, they are working hard to ensure that all the boats needed for the Championships are in good condition.
In August, once again, we will have the Youth Sailing Programme and, now that we have the additional instructors, we are planning to double the number of courses available by holding both morning and afternoon sessions.
We are also intending to increase the Youth Programme during term time. We currently have Island Academy pupils one afternoon per week and we are hoping the start new programmes in September with local schools such as Cobbs Cross & Liberta. These will be subsidized both by the Club and by Government hopefully.
Now that we have 3 sailing instructors, we are formulating an ambitious dinghy sailing programme for next season based on being open for sailing and lessons 6 days per week from 09.00 to 18.00. The number of temporary members who have joined this season – purely to sail dinghies, stands at 64.
Our records show that we have 137 Life Members but we have had no contact with many of these for some years now and in many cases have no details on file. The annual membership has risen from 109 at the end of 2007 to 183 by June 2008. This breaks down as follows:
Annual Full Voting Overseas Non-Voting Cadet Non Voting
2007 Membership - 39 2007 Membership - 69 2007 Membership 1
New Members 2008 - 44 New Members 2008 - 22 New Members 2008 - 8
Total Full Voting - 83 Total Overseas - 91 Total Cadet - 9
Our latest initiative is our FAMILY AFTERNOONS on Thursdays from 4 – 8pm. We have minders to monitor and entertain the kids, whilst parents can have a (stress free) drink & chat. A (nutritious) supper is provided by Leizu’s Real Food Company for both children & adults at very reasonable prices (EC15/EC25) The past 3 weeks have been very well attended and have been open to all, but we do ultimately intend to make this a members only weekly event.
We will also be starting a SATURDAY SAILING KID’S CLUB (age 8 and above) from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon. This is open to members only and kids must have some previous sailing experience. Please enquire for further details.
Dates for your diary – ‘Sunday Funday’ 27th July and Trivia Quiz Night Saturday 12th July
HEADS UP – Since the idea was conceived by Nautor Swan during ASW, there have been several weeks of discussion with RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) on the possiblity of Antigua Yacht Club hosting a 600 mile nonstop offshore race. We have heard, today, that this will almost certainly go ahead – the inaugural event is scheduled to take place in February 2009. Further details to follow asap. This will probably be the most exciting new racing event in the Caribbean for many years and, I’m pleased to say, will bring our Yacht Club enormous worldwide publicity.
Finally, we have attached some pictures from recent events and look forward, as ever, to hearing your comments and suggestions.
Wishing you fair winds and following seas.
